Experience

Tutoring experience with elementary and high school students. Currently a para-educator in Edmonds School District, mostly with elementary aged students and disabled teens/young adults (14-21) Coordinator (2 yrs) and mentor (3 yrs) in Gonzaga's Campus Kids mentoring/tutoring program SAT score: 2010 I love tutoring because I love to see students succeed! Although I studied biology and history at Gonzaga, I can also help students of all ages with math, general science, social studies, reading, and writing. As a tutor, I believe in tailoring each session to the student's learning style as much as possible. Although I am very strict about keeping students on task and pushing them to do their best, I also understand that no student learns the exact same way. For example, one student may practice reading comprehension best by reading a story and then having a conversation about the story. Another student may be the exact same age and read the exact same story, but would best practice comprehension by reading the story and then illustrating what happened. Some students may be able to work an entire hour without taking a break; others may need to intersperse breaks throughout the session. As a result, I try to approach each student with patience, encouragement, and respect for their input. Students who are highly independent may want to do work by themselves and then review it after it's all done, while others may need to work step by step with a tutor. I have found that students are often the best judges of what will work best for them. Given a choice between activities on the same subject, they will often choose the one that is both most engaging and most beneficial to them. I do push students to try a variety of activities and to stay focused, but I try to end each session with an activity I know the student enjoys (given they have finished all their other work). Additionally, I am more than willing to accommodate physical, developmental, or learning disabilities. If you think I am a good fit for your student, please don't hesitate to contact me!
